Girl Scouts return for third year to make cookie donation to veterans

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

COLUMBUS, Ohio (March 28, 2016) – On Thursday, March 24, the Girl Scouts of Ohio’s Heartland Council returned for a third year to donate 350 cases of cookies to Military Veterans Resource Center’s Veterans Food Bank.

The donation was made possible by their Operation Salute program, which collects donations from customers and sends cookies to military and veterans organizations. According to Jessica Martin, Product Program Operations Manager at the Council, the program started three years ago when the girls’ expressed interested in sending cookies to troops overseas.

“Many girl scout troops will make special collection boxes and signs for their cookie events to encourage customers to donate to Operation Salute,” said Martin. “It’s a great way for the girls and the customers to give back to our veterans and service members.”

In 2016, Operation Salute collected more donations than ever, with a total of 41,176 packages being donated to veterans and service members this season.

“Girl Scout cookies are a special treat for our veterans and especially their kids. We’re excited to partner with the Council again and surprise our vets with the cookies,” said MVRC Executive Director Len Proper.

Military Veterans Resource Center helps veterans develop self-reliance and independence by providing access to the resources they need to successfully manage life transitions. MVRC is based in Columbus and operates four centers throughout Ohio.
