The Top Interview Mistakes Candidates Make: Perspectives From A Hiring Manager

6/6/14 No one likes sitting in the interview hot-seat. Whether you’re a recent college graduate, a transitioning veteran, or an experienced professional, the interview can be a tense, high-pressure ordeal that’s easy to mess up and challenging to pull off. Yet, delivering a solid interview performance is necessary to get the job–or make it to the next round of interviews. To help our veteran job seekers improve their interview skills, I spoke to interview expert Brian Niswander, founder of InterviewSkills101.com, about the interview process from his perspective as a hiring manager. He gave me exclusive insight on the most common mistakes candidates make, and how you can avoid them. 1. Late Arrival Good interview etiquette indicates you should present yourself for the interview 10 minutes before it starts. However, many candidates show up late, which immediately rubs the interviewer the wrong way. According to Niswander, “If you can’t even make it to the interview on time, you’re sending a strategic message that you won’t make it to work on time, or meet your deadlines on time.” Avoid This Mistake: Avoiding this scenario is simple–show up early! Look up directions the day before and drive the route if you don’t know where to go. Even if you have a legitimate excuse for a late arrival, you’re still making an inconvenience for the interviewers, who will remember you showed up late. If it happens, all you can do to recover is apologize to the interviewers, explain why you were late, and then […]

MVRC Hosts Open House Event, Celebrates New Resource Center

6/5/14 Despite yesterday’s brief downpour, Military Veterans Resource Center’s Open House event drew a crowd out to the new Chillicothe resource center. Previously serving veterans out of the Chillicothe VA Medical Center, MVRC has moved to 1786 N. Bridge St., located north of the Chillicothe Mall Shopping Center. “Our goal with the open house was to celebrate the opening of our new resource center and to share the career services we provide veterans,” said Executive Director Len Proper. “We appreciate the community’s support and are grateful for everyone who came out to visit with us.” The event started at 10:00 a.m. and throughout the day, MVRC staff members gave tours of the new center, served the attendees a picnic lunch and handed out promotional items. Radio host Christina Wolford from WKKJ 94. 3 also broadcasted live from the event, which enticed several interested listeners to stop by. “So many people don’t know about these resources, and they’re free,” said open house attendee Tim Wilson. Wilson first met MVRC career specialist Dennis Lambert, who runs the center, while he was a patient at the VA Medical Center. “Dennis goes above and beyond helping so many people. He helped me find my job at Kenworth [Truck Company].” Now that MVRC has its own space, Lambert feels he’ll be able to gain a wider outreach and provide more veterans with career services that fit their needs. “The first day we put up [MVRC’s] new sign, I got three calls from people asking about […]

Dressing For Interview Success: 7 Tips For Women

5/14/14 According to our friends at Interview Skills 101, 65% of bosses say clothes could be the deciding factor between two similar candiates. Ladies and gentleman, I didn’t make a typo. If a hiring manager’s decision comes down to you and another candidate who brings the same skills to the table, there’s a good chance that your interview outfit will make or break the deal. Your appearance matters. Employers want people who will represent their company well to customers, clients, the public, etc.  So if you don’t give a second thought to what you look like before an interview, it’s time to change your ways. Plan your interview outfit the day before the interview, not one hour before. Ask a friend or relative for their opinion just to make sure you’re on the right track. If you’re a female job seeker, MVRC is giving you some extra help this week. Our Marketing Team has put together this infographic that highlights appropriate and inappropriate interview attire. Follow these steps and you’ll impress the hiring manager with your professional style!   need 7 tips
