Each year, the Thanksgiving holiday presents a time for us to reflect on the things and people we value in our lives. From the staff at Military Veterans Resource Center, we would like to give thanks for all of the veterans and families we get to meet and work with each day. Thank you for the sacrifices you have made for us and for the positive contributions you continue to make post-service. We are grateful for the opportunity to get to know you and help you through your periods of transition.
One way we try to show our appreciation this time of year is by preparing Thanksgiving dinner baskets for our veteran clients in need. On Nov. 24, 2014, we packed up boxes of beans, yams, potatoes, fruit, rolls, pies, and of course, whole turkeys to be distributed to veterans and their families. In total, we gave out 78 baskets, which together contained 2,400 pounds of food.
“Several of our recipients have large families and would not have had a Thanksgiving dinner without one of our baskets,” said Career Specialist Dan Dunaway. “The veterans were extremely grateful for our help.”
However, the best moment of the season happened when a veteran who received a food basket last year came back and donated $1000. He also gave $200 worth of gas cards and several restaurant gift cards. His donation will help many vets in need this year, and he demonstrated one of our core beliefs–the power of veterans helping other vets. We hope his story will inspire you too.
Have a safe and happy holiday season!
