What does Memorial Day mean to you? Posted May 28, 2017

Before you settle into your picnics, parties, camping, swimming at the local pool, cookouts and snatching as much candy as you can at your local parade, try to stop and think a moment of what the upcoming holiday really means to you. As a 25-year veteran of the Air Force and a military spouse, I know what Memorial Day means to me. Memorial Day weekend is chatting with one of my best friends online who…

Move gives vet hope Posted April 3, 2017

Moving can be stressful for some people and a downright pain for most. But for WWII veteran Dominic Pulito, the whole experience gave him a fresh look on life. “He is a completely changed person, since he moved,”  his caregiver Berdina Payne said. “He is more talkative…so much happier,” she added. The 96-year-old Pulito, who was living in a cramped apartment near Dublin, was moved in less than three hours by about a dozen volunteers…

Patriots Superbowl win proves you should never quit, no matter what Posted February 6, 2017

So, I attended a retreat for Post 9/11 female veterans this past May in which the theme was to ‘never quit.’  That mantra rings true with the seemingly impossible Superbowl win Sunday night. The Atlanta Falcons seemingly had the game in hand with a 28-3 lead over the New England Patriots in the third quarter, but by the time there was 53 seconds left in the fourth quarter, the Patriots had come all the way…

Several things you probably didn’t know about our Veterans Food Bank Posted February 2, 2017

Tammy Tucker, our agency specialist from the Mid-Ohio FoodBank stopped by today to train Dixie Bishop, our new veterans services specialist on how MVRC helps local veteran families. MVRC entered into a partnership with the Mid-Ohio FoodBank in 2015. “Its been a good partnership because we are able to help a underserved population (veterans),” Tucker said. “And your program is unique in that each household gets five days worth of food each time,” she added.…

After a brief roll-call and safety briefing, the more than 30 men and women got right to work. They came from all over the state and from all walks of life, with one common thread…

Vietnam vet receives new water heater thanks to MVRC grant Posted January 4, 2017

Why is it that as soon as you feel that first cold bite of winter, major appliances tend to break down? A local Vietnam veteran experienced just that when one of the heating elements in his water heater went bad in the beginning of December. Howard and Laura Heimlich were blessed with hot water once again courtesy of a grant MVRC obtained from Home Depot. What’s even better is his step-grandson and MVRC counselor, Ryan…

MVRC staff member participates in Wreaths Across America Posted December 29, 2016

Despite the cold misty air floating over gravestones of various sizes half-hidden by snow, more than 50 volunteers showed up to Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens on a recent Saturday to pay their respects to those who made the ultimate sacrifice. The group, bundled up in various layers some with gloves and some without, were there to participate in Wreaths Across America, a national initiative to make sure no veteran is forgotten during the holidays. Wreaths…
