Forrest E. Everhart Memorial Golf Course
Forrest E. Everhart
The Forrest E. Everhart Memorial Golf Course is named for Medal of Honor recipient Forrest E. Everhart, who served in the U.S. Army as a technical sergeant during World War II. On Nov. 12, 1944, Everhart was stationed in Kerling, France, commanding a platoon in a counterattack against a much larger German force. A series of heroic actions from Everhart, including charging at enemy fire to protect the last remaining machine gun and launching several grenade attacks, forced the enemy to retreat. On Sept. 10, 1945, Congress awarded Everhart the Medal of Honor and credited it to the state of Texas, the state where he lived at the time he enlisted.
Located on the Chillicothe VA Medical Center campus, the grounds of the golf course and the VA were formerly occupied by Camp Sherman, the third largest training camp for veterans during World War I.
In 1959, the Chillicothe VA opened the course for veteran patients only. At the time, the Forrest Everhart Memorial Golf Course was one of 75 golf courses operated by VA campuses nationwide as a means of recreational therapy for their patients.
In 2010, Veterans In Transition, Inc. took over golf course operations. Today, the Forrest E. Everhart Memorial Golf Course is one of the few remaining golf courses located on a VA campus.
Forrest E. Everhart Memorial Golf Course is a 9 hole public golf course that plays as an 18 hole course, with two tee boxes at each hole.
