If you're an employer who's interested in hiring Ohio's veterans, let me start by congratulating you on this business move. When you hire a veteran, you're gaining a highly skilled and motivated employee who will do what it takes to help your organization succeed. You'll also find a veteran's work performance often outmatches that of your civilian employees.
Now comes the tricky part. How do you go about hiring a veteran? How do you reach out to veterans who are qualified for a position with your company and let them know you want what they've got?
Military Veterans Resource Center can help. At MVRC, our goal is to help veterans find gainful employment so they may become productive, self-reliant citizens. We know that in order to accomplish this, it's critical to develop relationships with veteran-friendly employers and create opportunities where they can connect with job seeking veterans.
The following is a list of six ways we currently help companies hire vets. If you're in the business of hiring veterans--we're happy to provide these services for you.
1. Career Fairs
MVRC hosts several career fairs each year where employers can participate at no cost. The career fairs are open to all veterans, but we make sure our clients are prepared, professional and ready to interview. Past participants have said MVRC career fairs are some of the best they've attended, and oftentimes employers leave with 15-20 interviews lined up.
2. Private Hiring Events
For each private hiring event, we invite 2-3 companies to come together and recruit for their open positions. In the weeks leading up to the event, employers give us the job descriptions of the positions they want to fill. We'll then identify qualified veterans and prepare them to interview on the spot at the event. Because many veterans will attend the hiring events, employers tend to focus on filling positions with multiple openings, or continuously open positions. For example, we helped Senator Sherrod Brown host a private hiring event for the shale oil industry and helped over 100 veterans find placements with oil companies.
3. Broadcast Recruitment
When companies want to hire vets, usually they'll post the opening on their website, but MVRC can help you get a much wider outreach. At no cost to employers, we help them post open positions on H2H.jobs, a website created by the Department of Defense specifically for veteran job seekers. Other job boards such as Monster.com and Indeed.com use automatic indexers to pull H2H.jobs postings onto their sites--further increasing a job posting's visibility. In addition, MVRC career specialists are H2H.jobs online job coaches, so we can directly identify qualified candidates and match them with employers.
4. Single Point of Contact
When MVRC partners with an employer, we often work together by using a single point of contact (POC). Both MVRC and the employer will assign one person to be the POC for each organization. When a position opens up in the company, the employer's POC shares the information with our POC, who then reaches out to our veteran network and identifies candidates for the employer. In our experience, this is one of the most efficient methods for placing veterans in jobs with our partners.
5. Tax Incentives and Federal Contracting
The VOW to Hire Heroes Act of 2011 makes businesses eligible for an expanded Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC) when they hire qualified unemployed veterans for the first time. MVRC can help you fill out Form 8850 to ensure you receive a tax incentive for hiring veterans. We're happy to answer questions about the application, or point you to experts who can also assist with the application
6. Employers Veterans Clubs
It's common practice for employers to establish clubs or support groups for their veteran employees. Such groups help vets transition into a civilian work environment and introduce them to others making the same changes. MVRC is always willing to provide speakers for those groups. We can also provide employers with information on veteran unemployment topics.
If you're an employer looking to hire a veteran and one of these services catches your eye, feel free to contact us. We're eager to help employers who want to help our nation's veterans.
